Thunderball Grotto
Staniel Cay, Exumas
Thunderball Grotto is a stunning underwater cave that has appeared in two James Bond films—"Thunderball" (1965) and "Never Say Never Again" (1983).
This natural limestone formation features openings at the waterline that allow snorkelers to swim inside, where shafts of sunlight pierce the darkness creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The interior is home to colorful fish that have become accustomed to visitors.
Timing your visit correctly is essential. At high tide, the entrances are submerged and entry requires diving. At slack tide—the brief period between high and low tide—the entrances are easiest to navigate, currents are minimal, and the light effects are most dramatic.
Visiting Tips
- Time it right: Visit at slack tide for easiest entry and best light. Your captain will know the tide schedule.
- Bring fish food: Sergeant majors and other reef fish will swarm around you—bring fish pellets for an amazing experience.
- Underwater camera: The light rays streaming through the openings create incredible photo opportunities.
- Snorkel gear: A mask and snorkel are essential. Fins help but aren't necessary in the calm interior.
- Go early: Tour boats arrive mid-morning. For a peaceful experience, visit at first light.
