The Bahamas is home to some of the world's most spectacular blue holes - underwater sinkholes formed during the ice ages when sea levels were much lower. These geological wonders range from inland pools to ocean holes plunging hundreds of feet into darkness.

For divers, blue holes offer an otherworldly experience: crystal-clear water, dramatic depth changes, and unique ecosystems. Even non-divers can appreciate their beauty from above, where the contrast between shallow turquoise and deep blue creates stunning visual displays.

## Famous Blue Holes

-   **Dean's Blue Hole, Long Island:** The world's second-deepest known blue hole at 663 feet (202m). A mecca for free divers and a stunning sight even from the beach.
-   **Andros Blue Holes:** Andros has the highest concentration of blue holes anywhere on Earth - over 175 documented. Many remain unexplored.
-   **Sawmill Sink, Abaco:** An inland blue hole that yielded remarkable fossil discoveries, including crocodiles and tortoises.
-   **The Boiling Hole, Andros:** A tidal blue hole where reversing currents create a "boiling" effect at the surface.

## Visiting by Yacht

-   **Dean's Blue Hole:** Anchor in Clarence Town harbor and take the tender to the hole. Snorkeling and swimming are popular even for non-divers.
-   **Andros:** Many ocean blue holes are accessible by tender. Your crew can help locate holes suitable for your experience level.
-   **Technical Diving:** Some blue holes require advanced certification. Arrange a qualified dive master through your charter company.
-   **Best Conditions:** Calm weather and slack tide provide the best visibility and safest conditions for exploration.
